Warsaw is the capital of Poland. The biggest ghetto in Poland was the Warsaw ghetto, this is where the biggest uprising took place. When some of the people in the ghetto heard that they would be deported to Treblinka killing center. In response to this, young men in the Warsaw ghetto formed a resistance called the Z.O.B. The Z.O.B. used a small inventory of weapons that had been smuggled into the ghetto. In January of 1943, the Jewish resistance opened fire on German troops. Unprepared for an uprising, the Germans retreated after a few days.
After their small victory , the Jews trained and acquired more weapons and readied themselves to defend their ghetto once again. On April 19, 1943 German troops came to deport the people left into the ghetto. Over seven hundred and fifty Z.O.B. members armed with pistols, 17 rifles, and Molotov cocktails fought head to head with over 2,000 heavily armed, well-trained,ruthless German troops with tanks and flamethrowers. After days of fighting the Germans made no progress. Frustrated German commander General Jürgen Stroop ordered the entire ghetto to be burned building by building. For 27 days the Jewish rebels held off the powerful German troops, but on May 8, 1943 the Z.O.B. headquarters was captured. Almost all of the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto were killed in the fighting, killed in a death camp after their capture, or escaped through the sewers.Almost 300 Germans and 7,000 Jews were killed during the Warsaw uprising, but it was a lesson that the Jews were not timid and were willing to fight for what they believed in.
